CES Provides Support to Section 8 Tenants Facing Eviction

Reporting By KNBC Channel 4 News Team

The Coalition for Economic Survival and other community supporters rallied around tenants living at 1625 Crenshaw Bl today who are facing evictions due to the fact that their building is not covered by rent control. Tenants & supporters showed up at the Culver City offices of the building management company to demand that the evictions be rescinded or, at minimum, tenants be given a year to move with relocation assistance. Many are seniors & disabled low-income long-term Section 8 tenants who were given notices to leave after a new owner purchased the building. Without rent control no reason for eviction is needed, nor are tenants eligible for relocation assistance. Power Property Management Co has been harassing tenants & refusing to make repairs. The new owner is Las Vegas millionaire real estate tycoon Haskel Iny. The apartment has a vibrant community of elderly, veterans, disabled, college students, single mothers, and mostly African American families who are being forcibly evicted in order for the owner to jack up rents. Because of the state Costa-Hawkins Housing Act, the city can’t amend it’s rent control law. It’s time Costa-Hawkins is eliminated or amended!
